Firefox 142 debuts CRLite, topic stories, Link Previews, and AI extension support

Mozilla Firefox 142 introduces CRLite, an on-device certificate revocation system that stores all revoked certificates locally. This removes the need for online revocation checks, avoiding delays and third-party data exposure. With just 300 KB of daily updates, CRLite can handle the complete revocation list securely and efficiently, making browsing faster and more private. Mozilla has designed it to be adaptable for other browsers and internet clients, promoting wider adoption.

The update also expands AI features like the stable Link Previews, which lets users right-click on links to see a thumbnail, description, and estimated reading time, with optional AI-generated summaries for supported devices in select regions. Firefox now supports the wllama API, enabling extensions to run local large language models via transformer.js, while Enhanced Tracking Protection gains new exception lists to reduce website breakage.

Additional changes include a new topic-based stories feature on the New Tab page for U.S. users, developer updates like earlier access to network headers, new Debugger overlay controls, and support for Prioritized Task Scheduling and URLPattern APIs. Usability improvements such as refined address bar search, sidebar extension removal, and better tab group controls round out the release along with the usual security fixes.
