Ecosia & Qwant launch search index Staan to bolster EU digital sovereignty & independence
Ecosia has started delivering search results using its new European-based search index, giving Ecosia users in France a portion of results from this system. This marks a technological step for the search platform, which expects to serve 30% of French queries with its own index by the end of the year, while preparing for rollouts in additional countries.
Building on its European Search Perspective (EUSP) launched with Qwant in November 2024, Ecosia aims to further digital sovereignty and tech independence across Europe. The EUSP initiative was designed to promote a more ethical and fair internet aligned with European values.
Alongside these changes, Ecosia's new index — named Staan (Search Trusted API Access Network) — is positioned as the foundation for a privacy-focused, sovereign search infrastructure in Europe. Staan offers alternative search engines and AI companies reliable, secure access to fresh web data, strictly safeguarding user privacy and data security. While Staan already powers search engines such as Ecosia, Qwant, and Lilo, additional search platforms are expected to integrate with the index in the future.

i think this a good news
I'm amazed at the amount of ignorants in this continent, how could it be that you don't have any ideas what these people are trying to achieve with their globalist agenda 2030 and 2050?
Do tell.
The world could use more search index's!
Seeing Ecosia, that was a search engine that funded tree planting and climate actions rushing into AI seems counterproductive. It just looks like the biggest (and only few) EU search engines are joining to put AI in search results, but nothing about climate implications, or even how much it will cost Ecosia to use Staan (instead of planting trees).
Why the sudden push lately for European software? It seems like a EU agenda thing, I don't trust it at all.
Almost all tech stuff comes from the US, so it makes sense for the EU to promote its own software. US companies would theoretically have to hand over data if the US government wanted them to. And with Trump, you can't rule that out.
And I think it's good that there's finally a good alternative to Google.
You shouldn't trust the EU, each day we have less privacy and anonymity. They're all globalist and will do anything to make their sick agenda come true.
Who should we trust?
While the EU is far from perfect, I trust them far ahead of the US government and private mega-corporations.
Who's they? Also, any increase in competition is good in my books.
I trust open source software that I can locally host or trust the individual hosting it. Never, trust governments.
oooooh scary and real globalism
Why do you think the EU or a government is involved?
What exactly is the "sick agenda" that you're referring to?
