Open source email client Mailspring 1.16 brings Thunderbird-style autoconfiguration & more

Mailspring 1.16.0 is now available for Mac, Windows, and Linux, bringing several user-focused improvements to this open source email client. The update introduces a Thunderbird-style autoconfiguration feature, simplifying the process of adding new email accounts from a variety of providers.

While the release aims to streamline setup, it also resolves issues with in-app PDF attachment previews on both Windows and Linux, enhancing reliability for users who frequently share documents. Technology upgrades play a key role in this version, with the core stack moving to Electron 37.2.2, Chromium 138, V8 13.8, and Node.js 22.16. These changes promise faster JavaScript execution, improved email rendering, and for Linux users, access to native system context menus.

Beyond these core updates, the RPM Linux package now treats the dependency on lsb-core-noarch as optional, allowing greater flexibility in certain distributions. Other refinements include enhanced support for Chinese language users, an updated Czech translation, and a Snap package base shift to core24. Several additional minor bugs have also been addressed in this release.
