Meta will soon add passkey support for Facebook and Messenger on iOS and Android
Meta has announced it will soon offer passkey authentication on Facebook for iOS and Android devices, giving users a new way to log in that is designed to be easier and more secure than traditional passwords. Passkeys take the place of passwords by allowing users to verify their identity using a fingerprint, face scan, or PIN directly on their devices.
While rolling out this enhancement, Meta confirms that the passkey as well as associated biometrics are always stored on the user's device. According to the company, Meta never sees, shares, or stores the fingerprint, face scan, or PIN data used for passkey creation. This approach aims to reduce the risk of credential theft and increase privacy for mobile users.
In the coming months, passkey support will also expand to Messenger. Once available, a single passkey set up for Facebook will also work for Messenger logins, further simplifying account access. Users can also expect to use passkeys for securely autofilling payment details through Meta Pay and for protecting encrypted message backups. Despite these additions, traditional login options, such as passwords, will remain available in case you need to log in from a device that doesn't support passkeys.
