elementary OS improves window manager, dock, multitasking, screenshot capture, and more

The latest update to elementary OS version 8 focuses on major enhancements to the window manager, delivering a new gesture controller and resolving over 20 reported issues. Alongside these stability improvements, multitasking view gains practical updates: users can now swipe up to close windows, and app titles are always displayed, supporting workflows on touchscreen devices.

Additionally, taking a screenshot with a keyboard shortcut now issues a notification, allowing quick access to the screenshot in the file manager. The dock component reintroduces multiple requested features from Plank, such as multiple dots for applications with several windows and the ability to cycle through open app windows by holding a dragged item over an app icon. Users are also able to open context menus using a long-press, a feature that enhances usability for touch devices.

Beyond these primary changes, the dock benefits from additional bug fixes related to hide modes and memory efficiency. The update also delivers improvements to hot corners, light and dark mode switching, display settings, CalDAV calendar sync, screen reader compatibility, GNOME Web browser, and Flatpak sandboxing, broadening the distribution's accessibility and overall user experience.
