Microsoft launches PostgreSQL extension for VS Code with Copilot and Entra ID integration
Microsoft has released the public preview of its PostgreSQL extension for Visual Studio Code, aiming to help developers streamline database management and development directly in their preferred code editor. This extension enables users to manage database objects and draft queries without leaving VS Code, leveraging context-aware IntelliSense and the @pgsql GitHub Copilot agent for intelligent assistance.
Alongside fundamental management capabilities, the extension introduces notable features such as schema visualization, database-aware GitHub Copilot, Copilot Chat agent mode, session query history, and easy addition of database connections. These tools are designed to improve developer productivity while providing deep integration with Microsoft services.
Following this, users can enable password-less authentication using Entra ID, which allows for centralized identity management and simplified access control. The extension further supports seamless connections to Azure Database for PostgreSQL, simplifying workflows for developers already using Microsoft cloud solutions. Features like session query history and schema visualization boost transparency and understanding of complex database structures, rounding out a development experience focused on usability and efficiency.
