MacUpdater to be discontinued in January 2026, code and technology up for sale
CoreCode has announced that MacUpdater, the app relied on by Mac users for managing and updating software, will be discontinued on January 1st, 2026. According to a notice on the MacUpdater website, all MacUpdater 3 licenses will be supported until that date, after which no further development or technical support will be provided.
Rather than letting the popular updater fade away, CoreCode is seeking buyers for MacUpdater's code and user base. The company has also offered to license its underlying technology to interested firms, potentially opening the door for future development under new ownership.
MacUpdater has become known for supporting real-time updates for 6,700 apps and tracking version information for an additional 100,000, whether apps were installed from inside or outside the Mac App Store. With a quick scan, the tool could detect outdated software and usually allow direct updates or redirect users to developer websites for manual downloads.
This shift follows a business model that used perpetual licensing without subscriptions, which likely limited long-term profitability. While some users might hope for a successor, current customers are assured ongoing support until January 2026.

I've been using just MAS to update, what is the difference?
macupdater updates all the apps installed on your computer, not just those rated by Apple. It's a great tool :-)
I really hope they find a buyer.
They should just open source it, they are not making money from it anymore.
I agree, if you're discontinue something like this, open source it instead of selling it.
Especially because we paid for software that is now going to be deprecated. I bought my license last year, and now this. They didn't even tell their users in an email or something.
Always thought it was managed by MacUpdate.com, but no, it manages its own database, which would disappear if nobody bought it. So what the point to rely on a closed source tool and data if it can go dark at any moment? Better use (and contribute) to an open one ;)
