Video player MPV 0.40 brings native HDR support on Linux, console autocompletion, and more
MPV 0.40 has been released, introducing several significant updates to this open-source video player. The latest version features an updated console with improved autocompletion and visual styling, enhancing user interaction. The On-Screen Controller (OSC) now includes a new selection menu accessible via right-click, providing easier navigation.
HDR support is now native for direct rendering (DRM) and DMA-BUF Wayland on Linux, expanding the player's capabilities. Scripts can now access the clipboard natively through a new clipboard property, and a new command menu offers quick access to common actions.
The release includes an enhanced select.lua script, offering new selection options for watch history, editions, and DVD/Blu-ray titles. Additionally, a new positioning.lua script has been introduced for cursor-centric zooming and drag-to-pan functionality. Stream support for Blu-ray, DVD, and CDDA has been improved, alongside track selection enhancements and better metadata display.
MPV 0.40 also introduces box-styled profiles for on-screen displays, unifying the appearance of subtitles and the OSC. The umpv helper script now supports Windows, broadening the reach of MPV's simplified launcher tool. This version requires FFmpeg 6.1 or newer and libplacebo 6.338.2 or newer, and includes various other enhancements and bug fixes.
