Jellyfin Desktop 2.0 launches with rebranding, Qt 6 upgrade, and fresh features

The self hosted media server platform Jellyfin has launched a new official desktop app, introducing a rebrand and a major technical refresh. Jellyfin Desktop 2.0 replaces the former Jellyfin Media Player and is now built on Qt 6 and MpvQt, with the goal of improving performance and expanding playback capabilities for local media libraries.

Upgrading to the new desktop app requires a clean setup. Users must sign in again, re add their servers, and manually reconfigure all preferences, as settings from Jellyfin Media Player are not carried over. This reset applies to all existing desktop users moving to version 2.0.

The release also brings several user facing improvements, including an option for the HTML5 player to display a movie or TV show backdrop before playback, controls to disable UI zoom, Escape key support for exiting fullscreen mode, and adjustable playback speed. Alongside the desktop update, Jellyfin Server 10.11.5 has been released, focusing primarily on bug fixes rather than new features.
