Facebook will discontinue its external like and comment social plugins by February 2026

Meta has announced that it will discontinue two of its Facebook social plugins — the Facebook like button and the Facebook comment button — effective February 10, 2026. These tools have allowed users to like and comment content on external website using their Facebook profiles. Meta explains that this move aligns with its goal of supporting a modern and efficient platform while focusing on future innovation. The company notes that the plugins represent an earlier era of web development, and their usage has steadily declined as the digital landscape has changed.

Following the shutdown, both plugins will render as a 0×0 pixel element. This transition ensures that existing websites will not encounter errors or broken functionality, as the plugins will simply become invisible rather than disrupting site operations. Although no immediate action is required by website owners or developers, Meta suggests that those who prioritize code cleanliness may choose to remove the plugin code. This remains optional and can be completed at any point before or after February 10, 2026.
