Apple launches Digital ID feature for storing passports on iPhone and Apple Watch

Apple has launched a new Digital ID feature that let users create and store a government issued ID in Apple Wallet using a United States passport. To set it up, users scan the passport’s photo page and embedded chip, then complete a selfie with head movements to verify their identity.

Digital IDs will first be accepted at TSA checkpoints for domestic travel in over 250 airports across the United States. Apple already supports digital driver’s licenses in 12 states and Puerto Rico, and this new option is meant for people whose states do not offer mobile licenses or who do not have a REAL ID.

A Digital ID can be presented with an iPhone or Apple Watch but cannot replace a physical passport or be used for international travel. Users double click the side or Home button, select the ID, and hold the device near an identity reader without unlocking or handing over the device. The system is encrypted, and Apple says support will expand to additional businesses and organizations over time.
