WordPress.com integrates MCP, enabling AI assistants to access site data securely
Automattic has announced that WordPress.com now supports the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open standard that allows AI assistants to access site context and data. This update means AI tools such as Claude, ChatGPT, and Cursor can interact directly with WordPress.com sites, retrieving content and live analytics without requiring manual input from the user.
By implementing MCP, WordPress.com provides a secure way for AI assistants to communicate with a site, offering access to content, stats, and settings while protecting user credentials. Following the launch, every site on a paid WordPress.com plan is MCP-ready, though users must enable the integration to begin using it with their preferred AI agents.
Currently, the MCP integration offers read-only access, allowing AI assistants to surface site information and insights without login steps. Automattic has also indicated that future versions will expand to write access, broadening the automation possibilities for site management. Alongside major tools, a variety of AI-enabled applications such as Claude Desktop, Cursor, and Visual Studio Code can be connected via MCP, giving users flexible access to their data directly through their chosen AI tools.
