Tor Browser's latest alpha removes AI features introduced by Firefox for enhanced privacy

The Tor Project has released Tor Browser 15.0a4, the newest alpha version of its privacy-centric web browser. Version 15.0a4 incorporates key security updates from the Firefox codebase while prioritizing privacy by removing all recent artificial intelligence features introduced by Mozilla.

These AI removals stem from the Tor Project’s position that machine learning systems and platforms cannot be properly audited for security or privacy issues. To maintain user trust and avoid any promotion of such un-auditable systems, the development team has actively excluded them from this browser release.

Following these privacy improvements, version 15.0a4 also refines user interface elements unique to Tor Browser, especially when dark themes are enabled, enhancing visual consistency in low-light settings. In addition, the latest alpha makes protocol details more visible: desktop users will now see HTTP or HTTPS in the URL bar, in line with Tor’s emphasis on transparency. On Android, protocols remain hidden for space efficiency but can be revealed by interacting with the URL bar icon.

Tor Browser 15.0a4 is anticipated to be the final alpha before version 15.0 becomes stable in late October.
