VLC teases offline and real-time AI-powered subtitles and translation at CES 2025
At CES 2025, VLC Media Player showcased a groundbreaking feature: automatic AI-powered subtitling and translation, performed locally and offline in real time. VideoLAN, the organization behind VLC, released a video on Tuesday featuring president Jean-Baptiste Kempf demonstrating this innovative capability. Utilizing open-source AI models, the feature can generate subtitles in multiple languages without requiring internet access or cloud services.
Previously, AI-powered subtitling in VLC was accessible via a plug-in that employed OpenAI's Whisper for speech recognition. However, the new demonstration indicates that this functionality is now integrated directly into the VLC application, offering real-time translated subtitles. VideoLAN has not disclosed a release date for this feature.
This could be great. And if subtitles can be generated ahead of the video playback to be stored as ".srt" to be played on any device, or prevent draining computer battery, this would be amazing!
