Xbox is reintroducing friend requests for the first time since the Xbox 360 era
Microsoft is re-introducing Xbox friend requests, over a decade after discontinuing the feature. Beginning this week, Alpha Skip-Ahead users on Xbox consoles, and users in the PC Gaming preview on Windows PCs and handheld devices, will be able to preview an updated friends and followers experience. This change is part of the Xbox Insiders program.
The new system allows users to easily send, accept, or delete friend requests, making it simpler to connect with others. Friends are now a two-way, invite-approved relationship, providing more control and flexibility. Following someone remains a one-way connection, allowing users to stay updated with another player's shared content, whether it’s another player, club, or game.
Existing friends and followers will update automatically. Users will remain friends with those who had also added them as friends previously, and will continue following anyone who hadn’t. This feature is initially rolling out to Xbox consoles, Windows PCs, and handheld devices, with broader availability expected later.
Additionally, Microsoft is enhancing privacy and notification settings. Users can now decide who can send them friend requests or follow their account, and manage which notifications they receive. This update aligns with Microsoft's ongoing efforts to improve user control and social connectivity within the Xbox Game Pass ecosystem.
