The open-source video editor Shotcut has released version 24.08 with a new Subtitles Panel

Shotcut, the popular free open-source video editor, has released version 24.08, featuring a new Subtitles panel. This addition allows users to create, import, edit, and burn subtitles into their videos, accessible via View Subtitles.

A new Subtitle Burn In video filter overlays subtitle text on the project video, functioning exclusively on the Output track. Subtitles can be added to the Timeline but not to the playlist or individual clips, with a recommendation to complete timeline editing first to avoid synchronization issues.

To add subtitles, users click the “add” button, specify the track’s name and language, and use the “Add subtitle” button to input text. Multiple subtitle tracks can be added, with only the selected track visible in the Subtitles Panel and Timeline. Subtitles can be imported from SRT, VTT, ASS, and SSA formats and exported in SRT format. When exporting a project, subtitles can be embedded in MKV, MOV, and MP4 formats, with an option to disable embedding in the Export Other tab.
