Files v3.6: new dual pane features, enhanced sorting, and customization options released

Files v3.6 is now available for download, with notifications for existing users and free downloads or purchases through the Microsoft Store for new users.

Key updates in Files v3.6 include the ability to change pane orientation in Dual Pane mode, allowing users to select and adjust the arrangement of panes. Additionally, a new “Actions” menu in the title bar provides options to open new windows, toggle compact overlay, and manage panes in Dual Pane mode. Users can now also personalize folder locations with unique background images, adjusting opacity and alignment to their preference.

The update significantly optimizes sorting performance, particularly for large folders, showing a 167% increase in performance during tests with folders containing 40,000 items. Expanded localization support for Malay has also been added, thanks to community contributions via Crowdin. For a detailed list of all changes and improvements, users can visit the official changelog on the Files website.
