Gentoo-based Linux distribution Funtoo is being discontinued after 16 years of development
In a forum post written last Friday, Daniel Robbins, the founder and former project leader of Gentoo Linux, announced the termination of the Funtoo Linux project. Funtoo, a Linux distribution based on Gentoo Linux launched in 2008, will therefore cease operations.
In his post titled “All good things must come to an end”, Robbins explained that Funtoo began as a philosophy aimed at creating a fun, collaborative community. However, he feels that it no longer fulfills that vision for him, prompting his decision to move on. Robbins also clarified that there will be no successor for Funtoo, nor is he interested in transferring the project to someone else.
Users have been informed that the project will wind down through August. Funtoo containers will remain online until the end of August, giving users time to transition to alternative hosting solutions.
