Canva acquires generative AI platform Leonardo to boost AI features in design tools

Canva has announced the acquisition of generative AI platform Leonardo, just four months after acquiring the Affinity design suite. With this move, Canva aims to enhance its growing suite of AI products, leveraging Leonardo’s foundational model and a team of 120 researchers, engineers, and designers. The acquisition will support continued innovation in visual AI, bolstered by Canva's financial resources and expertise.

Leonardo will maintain its independent operations, continuing to develop its web platform for millions of users, including business customers. The integration will be accelerated with Canva’s licensed content from the Canva Creators program. Additionally, Canva plans to rapidly incorporate Leonardo’s Phoenix foundational model into its Magic Studio products, further expanding its AI capabilities.

Oh, look a new Adobe/Microsoft/Google/Meta/Apple-like giant is developing right before our eyes. Surely they won't be just as bad as the rest, right?

I would have liked Affinity to remain independent, but we’ll see how it develops, although I doubt that the one-time purchase model will last much more than a couple of years.
