Proton VPN allows credential-less Android access and expands free VPN to more countries
Proton has announced a significant initiative to support free and fair elections in 2024. In light of the fact that 60 countries, encompassing nearly 4 billion people, will hold national elections this year, Proton VPN will provide free VPN servers in regions with a history of censorship or political interference. These servers will be available at no cost starting two weeks before the elections and will remain free for a week following the elections.
This initiative leverages Proton VPN’s Smart Routing technology, which enables the service to offer VPN servers in countries with poor legal protections or unstable infrastructure. By using servers in neighboring countries that simulate the local IP addresses, Proton VPN can effectively bypass restrictions.
In addition to this, Proton has made it easier to access Proton VPN’s anti-censorship features by allowing users to access the Android app without creating an account. This move aims to enhance accessibility and ensure that more people can benefit from secure and private internet access during critical election periods.
