Google to shut down Google Fit APIs by 2025, pivots to Health Connect platform

Google has revealed that it will shut down its Google Fit APIs by June 30, 2025, which may impact fitness devices that depend on these APIs. This decision comes after the launch of Health Connect in 2022, indicating a pivot towards the broader Android Health platform.

Developers who are currently using Google Fit APIs have until June 2025 to transition to Health Connect to maintain their services. Google has offered migration guidance, but there is no direct substitute for the Goals API, which may impact users' ability to establish daily fitness goals.

The company has not yet clarified the status of Google Fit apps on Android, Wear OS, and iOS platforms, which remain operational despite the announcement of the API shutdown. The Google Fit app has not been updated with the Material You design language and has not added new features since Health Connect support was implemented in 2022. There is also speculation that Fitbit might become the default health tracking solution in the future, with Samsung and other Wear OS manufacturers also providing their own alternatives like Samsung Health.
