Discord refocuses on gaming roots with strategic redesign ahead of 10th anniversary
Discord has announced a strategic shift marked by a new redesign initiative to commemorate its ninth anniversary and prepare for its tenth year. Initially launched as a chat app for gamers, the platform has been expanding in recent years into other market areas to compete head-to-head with other chat services platforms like Wire, Google Meet or even Telegram. However, the company is now refocusing on its gaming roots and shared interests, driven by user feedback and changes following the pandemic.
Future updates will likely introduce more gaming-centric features, enhancing the platform's utility for its core audience. Despite this shift, Discord remains a valuable tool for community-centric communication and small group chats, retaining popularity in non-gaming sectors such as software development and AI communities, including AlternativeTo.
The current focus includes improving performance and usability, particularly in voice, video, and streaming technologies to reduce latency. Discord also aims to enhance cross-platform capabilities, allowing seamless integration across more devices, such as displaying gameplay status and joining voice chats directly from consoles. Additionally, new tools like the Embedded App SDK will support developers in creating and integrating new games and applications, while Discord Quests will be enhanced to boost social interaction and entertainment.

i'll prefer if they focus on privacy instead of a "stupid" design xD
Matrix (Element) is where privacy and security is at especially if you want Slack/Discord-like UI
yes i know but no one i know use them and they aren't use by gamers. i know discord isn't a privacy focus software but they could do minimum about privacy. when privacy is important i use wire or session.
