PeerTube releases version 6.1 with account data import/export and other improvements
PeerTube, the decentralized and federated video-sharing platform, has announced the release of its latest version, 6.1, which brings several significant features and improvements.
One of the major additions is the integration of account import/export functionality, allowing users to export all their account data, including videos, channels, and preferences, to a downloadable archive. This archive can be used as a backup tool or re-imported to another PeerTube instance. Note that this is not (yet) an account migration option.
Additionally, PeerTube 6.1 now preserves the original video file after uploading, and users can download it from their library or include it in the export archive. This allows users to have a local copy of their videos.
The update also enables users to add custom banners to their instance, which will be visible on various pages, including the instance search, about page, login page, registration page, and homepage. Avatars can also be used on the homepage of the instance.
PeerTube 6.1 introduces a new view counting system, which counts views after 10 seconds of viewing time instead of 30 seconds. Additionally, view counts are now based on a unique identifier generated by the web browser, rather than the user's IP address.
The update also adds an icon to the video player for easier access to subtitles, which can be displayed in the last used language or the first available in the list.
Furthermore, PeerTube 6.1 fixes two major security issues, adds Turkish to the list of supported languages (now 37 in total), and improves the overall user experience.
These updates aim to provide users with more control over their account data, improved customization options, and a more streamlined experience.
