Roblox bring real-time AI Chat Translator for in-game conversations

Roblox has recently launched an AI chat translator to facilitate communication among its players by breaking language barriers. The AI system, capable of real-time translations across 16 languages, aims to promote inclusivity by ensuring language differences do not impede interaction.

The translator, based on a transformer-based large language model (LLM) integrated with a mixture of experts (MoE) architecture, allows users to view the original message for transparency, while also maintaining chat monitoring for trust and safety.

Besides the chat translator, Roblox is leveraging generative AI models to improve user experience, including an AI chatbot assistant for developers and automatic image asset translation. Future enhancements include expanding the translator model to convert non-compliant words into compliant ones and exploring real-time voice translation. This series of new features, along with others such as the September-launched video calling feature, bring Roblox even closer to the concept of a hybrid between a video game and some form of virtual social network, so it should be interesting to see how this sort of metaverse evolves.
