Plex finally launches its movie rental service for users in the US

As announced nearly a month ago, the popular streaming media company Plex has announced its expansion into movie rentals, initially available only to U.S. customers. This new venture will provide an additional revenue stream for the company, supplementing its subscription services and ad-supported streaming, similar to platforms like Prime Video.

Renting a movie from Plex will follow certain rules. Customers will have a 30-day window to begin watching their rented movie, and once started, they can play the movie an unlimited number of times within a 48-hour period. Unfinished movies will be displayed in the "Continue Watching" section on Plex's home screen.

Plex has collaborated with major movie studios such as A24, WB, Paramount, MGM, and Lionsgate, and it has revealed that over 1,000 titles will be available for rent, with prices starting at $3.99. The rental service is currently limited to movies, as user surveys indicated a higher demand for movie rentals over TV show rentals or movie purchases. It's also worth noting that the Plex app for iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV currently does not support movie rentals, requiring users to rent content via the Plex website, which can then be viewed on the app.

Our take: If you want to explore some other excellent alternatives for video streaming, we invite you to take a look at the compilation we put together not long ago.
