MailMate adopts a subscription model with version 2.0 release, shifts from one-time fee

MailMate has transitioned to a subscription-based licensing model with the release of version 2.0 (r6067), moving away from its previous one-time payment structure. Users must now pay $10 every three months to maintain "Paid Mode" access, while lapses in subscription will switch the software to "Free Mode," where all functions remain but outgoing emails will include a header indicating the free status.

This change from the former $50 one-time fee aims to provide a consistent revenue stream to support ongoing development and maintenance, similar to the previous patronage system encouraging regular user contributions. Despite the new subscription model, customer support is not covered, and users might face delays or lack of responses to inquiries.

The developer noted that the extended period without a public release was due to uncertainties about software monetization, and the subscription model is intended to ensure future development amid potential challenges from major email providers affecting MailMate's functionality.
