Itch.io marketplace has been taken down offline by Funko following an AI phishing report

The popular indie game marketplace, itch.io, has announced via social media that its domain name has been taken down and is currently inaccessible. This incident stems from an AI-powered brand protection software, BrandShield, used by Funko, the company known for its Funko POP! vinyl figures. The software generated a false phishing report to the domain registrar, iwantmyname.

In response to the notice, itch.io initially took down the disputed page, citing that “it's not worth fighting stuff like that”. However, shortly after, the registrar disabled the entire domain, affecting all associated pages and subdomains.

itch.io is currently awaiting further information from iwantmyname to clarify the situation. Until then, the platform remains offline. The hope is for a swift resolution and restoration of the domain without further complications.

They're back again! Another sad reminder that whatever the technical security is on a website, human is still the more vulnerable part of it. Good to see they've managed to be back quickly tough.
