Bluesky strengthens impersonation policy within the platform with verified domain handles

Bluesky is tackling the issue of impersonation by implementing a more aggressive impersonation policy to boost user trust and ensure authentic interactions. The new policy will lead to the removal of accounts involved in impersonation or handle-squatting.

To further authenticate high-profile users, Bluesky is helping them set up verified domain handles, a part of a broader strategy to prevent "identity churning," where accounts mislead users by changing identities after gaining followers.

Impersonation is a significant challenge for Bluesky, with nearly half of the top 100 accounts having at least one impersonator. While parody, satire, and fan accounts are still allowed, they must now clearly label themselves in their display names and bios. Bluesky is also considering additional methods to enhance account verification and plans to keep users updated on these efforts.

Good! Because just paying for an verified account doesn't fix this problem at all, as another social network has proved. The decentralization doesn't really help since there is no authority to validate the identity. Mastodon also uses verified domains and this work pretty well once the extra configuration on server has been done (and the domain renewed regularly).
