Apple introduces Share Item Location to enhance item recovery and airline luggage tracking

Apple has unveiled a new iOS feature, Share Item Location, designed to aid users in locating and recovering misplaced items by securely sharing the location of an AirTag or Find My network accessory. This feature is now available in most regions as part of the public beta of iOS 18.2, and will soon be accessible to all users as a free update for iPhone Xs and later models.

Share Item Location enables users to generate a link in the Find My app on their Apple devices. The recipient can view the item's location on an interactive map through a website, which updates automatically with new location data and timestamps. The shared location deactivates once the item is recovered, can be stopped by the owner, and expires after seven days.

In collaboration with over 15 airlines, including British Airways, Delta, and Lufthansa, Apple is integrating this feature into their customer service processes for tracking mishandled or delayed baggage. More airlines are expected to join over time. Apple has worked with these airlines to ensure secure and private acceptance of Share Item Location, utilizing existing Apple devices within the airlines' systems. Access to the shared location link is restricted to a few authenticated individuals.

Additionally, SITA will incorporate support for Share Item Location into WorldTracer, a global baggage-tracing system used by over 500 airlines and ground handlers worldwide. This integration aims to enhance the efficiency and security of luggage tracking in the air transport industry.
