Amazon to discontinue its free streaming service, Freevee, and move content to Prime Video

Amazon has officially confirmed its plans to discontinue its free ad-supported streaming service, Amazon Freevee, and integrate its content into Prime Video. This transition, set to occur in the coming weeks, signifies the end of Freevee's run as a separate entity. Originally launched in 2019 as IMDb Freedive, the service was later rebranded to IMDb TV and then Freevee, offering a mix of original free programming, licensed content, and shows from Prime Video.

The integration comes after Amazon introduced ads to its Prime Video platform in January 2023, creating an overlap with Freevee's ad-supported offerings. Despite Freevee's closure, Amazon guarantees that Prime members' content library will remain unaffected. Non-Prime members will still have access to free streaming content, including Amazon MGM Studios Originals, licensed movies, series, and FAST channels through Prime Video.

This strategic move aims to position Prime Video as the central platform for both subscription-based and ad-supported content, while also reducing brand confusion. If you're looking for some good free alternatives to Freevee, check out the list we put together a while back.

Not surprising. As Amazon has been beefing up their Prime Video offerings with FAST (Free ad supported television) channels and injecting ads, the countdown began on Freevee.

I'm not too bothered because I do use alternatives (like Pluto and Plex). Plus, I can borrow DVDs/Blu-ray from the local library.
