WinDirStat releases first update in 19 years with many new features and improvements

WinDirStat, the well-known disk usage statistics viewer and cleanup tool for Windows, has launched version 2.0.1, marking its first official update in 19 years. This release introduces several new features and improvements, including multiple item selection and enhanced scanning performance. Users can now find duplicate files using file hashes and access popular native cleanup utilities through new menu shortcuts.

The update also includes a portable settings mode via the WinDirStat.ini file, the ability to export scan results to a CSV file, and options for compressing files with transparent compression. New context menu options allow users to display the full Explorer context menu and launch PowerShell. Enhancements have been made to toolbar icons, and support for long file names has been added. Users can relaunch the application with elevated credentials and utilize backup/restore privileges to scan previously inaccessible files.

Additional improvements include Pacman drawing enhancements, resolution scaling improvements, and exclusions for reparse point scanning. The update supports per-drive scanning multithreading and introduces columns for displaying file owner information and distinguishing between logical and physical allocation. Built-in translations for alternate languages and a shell menu entry for the legacy menu are also part of the update.

With version 2.0.1, non-default settings from version 1.x will need to be reconfigured. The software now features an MSI-based installer, and offers native 64-bit and ARM builds. The update also includes various minor enhancements and numerous bug fixes.

WinDirStat is a disk usage analyzer and cleanup tool that provides a comprehensive visual representation of your storage space. Inspired by KDirStat, it offers features like a tree view and file size display, allowing users to easily identify large files and directories. Rated 3.9, WinDirStat is ad-free and often compared to alternatives like WizTree, Baobab Disk Usage Analyzer, and TreeSize.

Wiztree does the same but is faster.

WinDirStat doesn't have a big vibrating DONATE button in the top right at all times like Wiztree. (Nagware)

SpaceSniffer icon SpaceSniffer is a better pick IMO, it's a bit buggy at times but otherwise fast and responsive.

Pretty exciting actually, I use windirstats at least 3 times a year to help people clean out their computers and find missing space being taken up by things that don't even need to exist anymore.

For myself I use Xyplore, but it's paid software so not something I can just install on other peoples computers.

Before the update, Windirstat was 631 KB large, the new x64 MSI is 2476 KB large. Yes it works better, but at the cost of it's own size. But it could have been worse.

Considering this is the first update in nearly 2 decades, jumping from 0.6mb to 2.5mb is still really good. I have word docs bigger than that. Modern hardware and storage is MUCH more complicated and diverse than it was back then, and way more powerful. A program this useful that scans all of your storage this quickly while still being this tiny is fantastic.

Nitpick much? I haven't worried about a program taking up an extra ~2mb of space since I had a 286 with a 20mb HDD.
