TrueNAS 24.10 “Electric Eel” has been released with a shift from Kubernetes to Docker

TrueNAS has announced the release of version 24.10, code-named “Electric Eel”, bringing a host of new features and improvements to its open-source enterprise storage solution based on OpenZFS. A significant update in this release is the transition of the TrueNAS Apps feature backend from Kubernetes to Docker, aimed at enhancing app deployment and management. Users can now deploy custom Docker images through a guided wizard or a Compose YAML file.

The new version introduces the ability to extend RAIDZ vdevs with individual disks and offers new TrueCloud Backup Tasks, which simplify Storj iX cloud backup and restoration processes. A global search function has also been added to the user interface, facilitating easier navigation of pages and settings.

The dashboard has undergone a revamp, now featuring more widgets, enhanced data reporting, and increased customization options. The user interface also supports NVMe S.M.A.R.T. tests. Furthermore, the release maintains SMB alternate data streams when ingesting data from remote servers and includes a rewritten installer to better support future developments. Other enhancements include improved UI table presentation, integration with global search, and the replacement of nslcd with sssd to bolster Kerberos, NFS, and SMB support in non-AD environments. Additionally, each installation now generates a unique system ID.

The release of TrueNAS 24.10 also introduces ZFS Fast Deduplication, which is currently experimental and disabled by default, with full UI integration planned for future releases. Additionally, enclosure management performance has been aligned with version 13.3 to enhance management capabilities.
