ElevenLabs acquires Omnivore to boost ElevenReader app for enhanced reading experience

Generative AI company ElevenLabs has announced the acquisition of Omnivore, an open-source read-it-later application. The Omnivore team is joining ElevenLabs to support the development of their new ElevenReader app, aimed at enhancing accessible reading and listening experiences. In a blog post, Omnivore co-founders Jackson Harper and Hongbo Wu expressed that this move would allow them to reach a broader audience and create more engaging experiences for serious readers.

Omnivore users are encouraged to create a free account with ElevenReader. They will have the ability to export their data from Omnivore until November 15, 2024, after which all user information will be deleted. ElevenLabs has emphasized its commitment to the developer community by ensuring that the Omnivore codebase remains fully open-source. This approach allows developers to continue building upon and enhancing Omnivore’s technology.

It was one of my main apps. I was looking for an affordable option. I've seen that wallabag created a tool for us to migrate from Omnivore. https://wallabag.org/news/20241031-migrate-from-omnivore/

It was one of my main apps as well. And to buy a subscription for 60€/y is not an option for me. I was looking for an affordable option.

I've seen that wallabag created today a tool for us to migrate. And wallabag is at 11€/y really affordable I think. And its open source as well.

I wouldn't be surprised if they start using that data to train AI and bypass copyright because it's collected by humans.

I had Omnivore on my TODO list of apps to check out. Well, at least now I have one less app to worry about. Sad news. Omnivore looked really nice.
