Valve reverses AI content ban on Steam and introduces new updated guidelines
Valve has introduced new guidelines for AI content on Steam, a reversal of its decision in mid-2023 to block games using AI assets from its platform. The primary amendment is the addition of an "AI disclosure section" in the content submission process, which necessitates developers to explain how their games utilize AI content.
AI content is divided into two types by the company: pre-generated and live-generated AI. The latter requires safeguards to prevent the creation of illegal content. Valve is focusing on transparency, making the AI disclosure information available on the Steam store pages to help customers understand how AI is used in the games they're interested in.
A reporting system is also being developed to enable players to report illegal content in games that use live-generated AI. Valve has also committed to being more open to publishing games that use AI tech on Steam, but Adult only sexual content created with live-generated AI is still not allowed for release, although the company plans to review this policy as it continues to learn from submitted games and stays informed on legal developments in AI.
