Zoom updates its Terms of Service that allowed it to train AI on customer data without clear consent
Zoom recently faced criticism when several reports pointed out that the company's terms of service implied customer data could be utilized for AI training without user permission. There was no clear way for users to opt out of their data being used for training Zoom's AI models.
In response to the controversy, Zoom has updated its terms and now explicitly mention the necessity of consent multiple times, stating, "For AI, we do not use customer audio, video, or chat content for training our models without customer consent."
Despite this, only account owners are required to consent before a meeting, leaving other participants with the decision to either accept the terms and join the meeting, or decline and leave.
In June, when Zoom introduced new AI features, including a meeting summary tool, some experts already raised concerns that those terms may have permitted Zoom to access more user data than necessary, including customer call data.
