Google Photos introduces AI-powered 'Memories view' feature for a personalized Scrapbook experience

Google Photos has introduced a new feature called Memories view, initially available to US users. The feature uses AI to help users recreate and share memorable moments in a scrapbook-like timeline, featuring significant events and daily interactions. The Memories view builds on the existing Memories feature, which showcased past moments in a carousel format at the top of the Google Photos app.

The new feature merges elements of Stories and Facebook Memories, allowing users to revisit favorite photos from past months and years. It also enables users to modify their memories by adding or removing photos, and renaming their Memories view with custom titles instead of Google Photos' default labels. An AI-powered tool from Google Labs offers alternate title suggestions for Memories view, with user feedback improving its effectiveness over time.

The Memories view also supports collaborative efforts, with users able to invite others to contribute their favorite photos and videos, and of course, the assembled timeline can also be shared on social media platforms. Although the feature is initially launching in the U.S., Google intends to expand it to international markets in the upcoming months.

Our take: This is quite similar to what hundreds of gallery apps like Samsung Gallery have to create albums automatically, but being powered by AI can be quite interesting, as it enhance the ability to recognize situations, people, places, and moments more accurately and with a faster learning capacity.
