Reddit's new API charging policy forces popular Reddit clients to shut down
Reddit has recently implemented its new API charging policy, despite facing protest from third-party application developers. The policy, which came into effect on Saturday, entails charging millions of dollars to these developers. As a result, many Reddit clients, including popular ones like Apollo, rif is fun, BaconReader, and Sync for reddit, are shutting down.
In a farewell post on Reddit, Christian Selig, the developer of Apollo, expressed disappointment with Reddit's approach, stating that if Reddit truly wanted a solution that worked for everyone, they should have made an effort to listen instead of resorting to “dishonest, callous, and punitive pricing”.
While some third-party Reddit apps, like Narwhal, will remain usable, they will come at a cost in order to offset Reddit's API charges. However, Reddit has announced that accessibility-focused apps will be exempt from the new pricing policy. This exemption has been granted to apps like RedReader and other accessibility-focused third-party apps.
