Netflix discontinues cheapest ad-free plan in the UK and US following similar move in Canada
Netflix, the streaming giant, has discontinued its cheapest ad-free plan in the UK and US, reducing the options for new subscribers to stream without ads. The change follows the phasing out of the basic plan in Canada in late June.
The company's sign-up page FAQ states, “the Basic plan is no longer available for new or rejoining members. If you are currently on the Basic plan, you can remain on this plan until you change plans or cancel your account.”
Previously, the $9.99 per month basic tier provided a balance between Netflix’s pricier ad-free tiers and its ad-supported plan, allowing HD streaming on a single device.
The discontinuation of the Basic plan is part of Netflix's strategy to increase revenue through advertising. Despite the dissatisfaction expressed by some users, the strategy appears to be effective. Is Netflix trying the gradual change approach? After people being upset about them cracking down on account sharing, they made this cheaper ad plan. Now they're taking that away (without proper justification besides profits of course) and you're back to the original position.
