MPV 0.36.0 released with Wayland improvements, Vulkan-based hardware decoding and more
MPV, a free and open-source media player known for its support of a wide array of media file formats, audio and video codecs, and subtitle types, has recently released version 0.36.0. This update introduces initial support for fractional scaling and on-screen display (OSD) under the Wayland display server protocol, broadening its compatibility with different setups.
Furthermore, the new version of MPV now includes support for Vulkan based hardware decoding. By leveraging the Vulkan API, MPV 0.36.0 can provide more efficient, low-overhead hardware-accelerated video playback. The update also introduces support for ARIB captions, a standard widely used in Japanese broadcasting, and the new version can parse Dolby Vision metadata for dynamic scene brightness.
Alongside these significant feature additions, MPV 0.36.0 also includes other improvements and bug fixes, further enhancing its stability and performance. This release continues MPV's tradition of delivering a versatile and robust open-source media player to its users.
