1Password moves towards a future without passwords and initiates passkey support for unlocking your vault

1Password, a widely-used password manager, is making strides toward a future without traditional passwords. After announcing in June that native support for passkeys would be coming to the iPhone and iPad app with iOS 17, the company is now replacing the key to users’ password vaults. Soon, 1Password users will be able to unlock their vaults using just a passkey.

The company has initiated a private beta that allows a select group of testers to create and unlock a 1Password account with a passkey. This marks a significant milestone as they move toward their objective of rolling out this feature to all users later this year.

The process of unlocking 1Password with a passkey is simple and secure. Users utilize the biometric solution integrated into their device to unlock 1Password. After creating a passkey, the same hardware can be used to unlock the 1Password account on other trusted devices. This approach combines best-in-class security with maximum convenience.

This private beta is merely the first step. 1Password plans to release updates regularly as they progress toward a public beta and, eventually, a version that’s ready for all customers.
