Google initiates the enforcement of Google Accounts over original Fitbit accounts for new users, and encourages previous users to migrate now
Google's acquisition of Fitbit in early 2021 has set the stage for the integration of Fitbit accounts with Google accounts. The release of Fitbit's Sense 2 and Versa 4 smartwatches in September 2022 showcased a user interface similar to Wear OS 3, signaling the upcoming integration between Fitbit and Google. A month later, Google launched the Pixel Watch, which became the first Wear OS smartwatch to feature Fitbit integration. As of June 6, users can now log in to Fitbit's app using their Google accounts.
Existing Fitbit users have a two-year timeframe, until early 2025, to transition to a Google account. However, new Fitbit users will now have to opt for the Google Account approach. Furthermore, certain advanced Fitbit devices and features may exclusively function with the latest account types. The migration process allows users to transfer their data and ensures a smooth transition to the integrated system now, and after the deadline, Google will require users to migrate to a Google account in order to continue using Fitbit. It's important to note that signing up for Fitbit using the "Sign in with Google" option does not automatically mean using a Google account; users still need to go through the migration process. If you want to know how to do the migration step by step, you can always take a look at Fitbit's tutorial video.
Google has addressed user concerns about data privacy, assuring users that their health data will remain separate from other Google services and will not be used for targeted advertising, as you can read in the official statement.
