1Password introduces opt-in and 'privacy-preserving' telemetry system
1Password, the popular password manager, had announced the development of a new privacy-preserving telemetry system a couple of months ago. The company has now published a blog post providing more details about the system, which they say will help them build a better 1Password without compromising on their commitment to protect users' privacy.
Telemetry is a feature that collects usage data, and many applications and all operating systems have such systems in place. Developers may use it to analyze issues or usage, which may help prioritize development. However, some users are concerned about the potential for such systems to collect too much data or share it with third parties.
To address these concerns, 1Password's telemetry system will be opt-in instead of opt-out. Users will receive a prompt about data collecting, and it is up to them to agree to it or decline the request. 1Password adds that they will only collect what is needed to provide their service and build a better 1Password, and that they won’t collect usage data without users' awareness and consent.
1Password plans to gradually roll out the new telemetry system starting this summer. The company says they will provide more information about the system and how it works as the rollout progresses.
