Microsoft Edge is adding additional setting for strict media autoplay blocking

Microsoft Edge has announced the release of a new autoplay setting, Block, that will allow users to stop all media on a site from automatically playing. The team behind the project has stated that they have “heard your requests for strict blocking of media autoplay, and we are excited to share it is now available.”

The new setting is more restrictive than the existing ‘Limit’ option, as it blocks automatic playback on all sites regardless of previous usage. It is also designed to be easy to enable. Users can navigate to edge://settings/content/mediaAutoplay in the address bar and select Block from the drop-down menu, or alternatively navigate through the Edge settings page to “Cookies and Site Permissions”. Once there, the “Media Autoplay” setting can be found in the permissions area on the right-side pane.

Microsoft has started to make the feature available to some of their Canary users, and will continue to roll it out to more customers over the coming weeks. This new setting has been welcomed by users, as it will give them more control over what content is automatically played on their devices.
