Bluesky: The Twitter alternative from Jack Dorsey, now available on Android!
Bluesky, the alternative to Twitter from Jack Dorsey, the co-founder of Twitter, has released on Android devices through invitation only. The app boasts Twitter-like features such as following and searching for other users and creating posts with photos. However, it is still in beta and has a limited number of users, with around 25,000 testers, and still lacks basic features like direct messaging.
Bluesky was created in 2019 as a decentralized standard for social media platforms and was originally backed by Twitter. However, it broke off from Twitter in 2021 and is now an independent app. Bluesky has joined the likes of Mastodon, Hive Social or the recent Substack Notes, upstart Twitter clones, that emerged after Elon Musk's takeover.
Bluesky aims to empower users to decide how they want to see and consume social media. Jay Graber, the CEO of Bluesky, stated that an open marketplace of algorithms will provide developers with the freedom to experiment and publish algorithms that anyone can use. The app will use a combination of automated filtering and server-level moderation controlled by admins to ensure user safety. Moderation is still an issue to be resolved before the app opens to the public, but users will be able to subscribe to additional sets of moderation labels to filter out more content or accounts.
