Sunbird suspends operations amid security concerns, breaching promises of secure messaging
Sunbird Messaging, the Android messaging app that offered iMessage access, has temporarily suspended operations due to security concerns. This decision comes after an investigation into claims that the app's messages may not be fully end-to-end encrypted, contradicting its initial promises of secure messaging.
Sunbird had recently collaborated with Nothing, a phone brand by OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei, to launch Nothing Chats, a service that enabled Phone 2 users to send texts via iMessage, funny enough, was removed from the Google Play Store only one day after its launch, reportedly to fix several bugs, although it is likely related to Sunbird's recent issues.
Sunbird also faced scrutiny for storing thousands of media files on Firebase, contradicting its claims of not collecting message data. The Sunbird app has been removed from the Google Play Store, raising questions about its future availability and the severity of its security problems (dragging Nothing Chat along with it). Although the company has indicated that the shutdown is temporary, the lack of specific details leaves users uncertain about the app's future.
