Notepad++ celebrates 20th anniversary with version 8.6 featuring multi-edit functionality

Notepad++, the widely-used Windows text editor, has unveiled its version 8.6, celebrating two decades since its inception. The software first launched on November 23, 2003, with version 1.0. From its initial release to the current version 8.6, Notepad++ has had 238 official releases, not including those retracted due to critical bugs.

The standout feature of version 8.6 is Multi-edit. This functionality enables users to select and modify multiple sections of text simultaneously, akin to multi-cursors in many code editors.

Another addition in this version, responding to user demand, is the ability to recall inaccessible files across sessions. This is achieved by utilizing empty and read-only documents as placeholders. To activate this feature, users should select the Remember inaccessible files from past session option in the Backup section of the Preferences dialog.

In addition to these new features, version 8.6 also delivers further enhancements and bug fixes to improve the overall user experience.
