HyperOS, the new operating system to replace MIUI, will crack down on bootloader unlocking
After 13 years of activity, Xiaomi decided to replace MIUI and introduce its new operating system, HyperOS. Revealed on October 26, HyperOS is based on Android 14 and designed for smartphones, iOT, cars, and smart home devices. The global release is set to be available in the first quarter of 2024.
HyperOS, despite a complete architectural rewrite, retains a design similar to MIUI. It features an integrated HyperConnect device centre for remote control of all devices within the Xiaomi ecosystem. The new OS also promises better performance than MIUI, offering more power efficiency and stability, especially during resource-intensive smartphone gaming.
The new operating system has restructured the file system, memory management, image processing subsystem, and networking system to facilitate the transfer of apps, clipboard content, and notifications between devices. It includes the Xiaomi AI Assistant for generating texts, images, and real-time subtitles for video conferences, and introduces a voice search feature for images in photo albums.
However, Xiaomi has stated that HyperOS phones will have their bootloader locked by default, and users will need to apply for permission to unlock their devices via its forum. Devices with unlocked bootloaders will not receive any HyperOS updates if left in an unlocked state.

Source says that it will be disabled by default, which it always has been, and that users would have to apply to request unlocking, which has always been the case, so I don't get what the change is? Maybe the request will be more restrictive or require some additional steps? Anyway, if it becomes cumbersome or impossible I guess they can say goodbye to a few customers, like me, but most likely not a lot.
Ok I read another source and the unlocking is subject to time limit, which it was already, and limited to three devices per year which it was already in place as far as i remember. The new requirement is being level 5 on the official xiaomi forums, which is an absolute bummer. However, this is an announcement for the chinese version on the chinese market. There's no announcement yet for the international market.
"they can say goodbye to a few customers, like me, but most likely not a lot"//
Guess who a dozen people ask for phone recommendations, and guess how many Huawei phones I have recommended since 2019.
I would think that the goodwill of nerds and people who care about true ownership and repairability is somewhat important.
literally one of the very few good features of xiaomi phones was that they could be easily unlocked and there's plenty of custom roms for them... but it looks like I'll have to pick something else for my next phone...
Not true. You have to wait for one week to unlock bootloader of their MediaTek based phones. Alternate option is using reverse engineered tools from github
Xiaomi phones have bootloader locked by default since the beginning, Most phones do. Updates however is a different story. If you're installing custom rom anyway then it's not a problem but if you want to root your phone on stock os or need unlocked bootloader for anything else then it's a bad news.
Xiaomi taking anti consumer measures, seems like MIUI is so shitty that a lot of users unlock their bootloader. It's Xiaomi's right to replace MIUI with something that works better, but I can't find it to be good news, as it removes users control over their systems
The direction the world is headed is where everything is “connected”, so you have little to no control.
