Google's Gboard beta tests new 'Scan text' feature for direct text extraction from images

Google's Official Android keyboard app, Gboard, is reportedly beta testing a new Scan text feature that uses Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology to extract text from images directly into applications.

The feature, hidden in Gboard's beta version 13.6, enables users to capture text from images with their device's camera and insert it into a chosen text field. The Scan text feature, similar to Google Lens OCR capabilities, offers a seamless user experience by preserving the cursor position, making it convenient for users to reuse the extracted text in their applications.

Although the Scan text feature is currently only available in Gboard's beta version 13.6, it is likely to be more accessible in future beta releases. This feature aligns with Google's recent emphasis on AI development, seen in Gboard's features such as Stylus Handwriting Mode, Compact Voice Typing, Stickers and AI-Powered Proofreading.
