Valve's Proton 8.0-4 stable release brings more Windows games on Linux

Valve has announced the stable release of Proton 8.0-4 on the Steam client, a Wine-based software that powers Steam Play, designed to enhance the experience of running Windows games on Linux.

The latest Proton 8.0-4 update extends official support for a range of Windows games to be played on Linux, including Arthurian Legends, CHAOS CODE -NEW SIGN OF CATASTROPHE-, EverQuest II, Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath HD, Songs for a Hero – Definitive Edition, STAR WARS Knights of the Old Republic II, and The Longest Journey.

In addition to expanding game support, Proton 8.0-4 also augments the performance of previously supported games and introduces NVIDIA NVAPI support for numerous titles.

The new Proton release further refines support for the Battle.net, EA desktop app, and Ubisoft Connect launchers. It also addresses a race condition that was impeding the correct functioning of controller hotplug, and resolves a problem where games would crash when dragging files/images over a game window.

Underpinning this new release is an array of software including Wine-Mono 8.0.1, vkd3d-proton v2.10, dxvk v2.3, dxvk-nvapi v0.6.4, and vkd3d. Moreover, Proton 8.0-4 has added support for Steamworks SDK 1.58.
