Twitter/X introduces $1 annual fee for new users to be able to use the platform
Elon Musk has instituted a mandatory $1 fee for new users of the social media platform X, previously known as Twitter. This move comes as the company reportedly faces financial challenges.
The X support account has disclosed a new program being tested in New Zealand and the Philippines, called “Not A Bot”. New, unverified accounts will be required to subscribe to a $1 annual subscription to post and interact with other posts. The company has clarified that existing users are not affected by this test.
The introduction of this fee is part of X's strategy to combat spam, manipulation, and bot activity on the platform. The company maintains that the small fee will aid in balancing platform accessibility. X has stated that the new fee is not intended to be a “profit driver”.
Existing users of Twitter/X need not be concerned about the fee, as it currently only applies to new users. However, the functionality for non-paying new users will be significantly limited. They will be able to follow others and view their feed, but the ability to tweet, retweet, reply, and DM other users will be restricted to subscribers of the $1 annual subscription.

If you want to use the platform so badly and you can't afford that amount then don't pay it and don't use the platform. It really is that simple. Social media is not a MUST in life. Also if you are willing to pay the silly monthly streaming service prices for ALL these services but are complaining about paying $1 A YEAR to use X then, get a grip.
Small costs to combat spam is probably kind of effective. Way more expensive at least to create big network of users. And the company get more money / resources to fight the spam.
I mostly wished people would stop calling it Twitter. It's like calling MacOS, OSX.
X and Twitter are different things that exist at different times in history.
As for the $1 stopping bots... I don't see that happening. The powers to be that are making all the bots have deep pockets as long as there is massive political gain from botting X he could charge $100/mo for bot accounts and they would still flood the place.
users are gonna hate this
